Join the call to defend OpenAI's nonprofit mission
OpenAI started as a nonprofit organization meant to develop AI technology to benefit humanity as a whole.
Now CEO Sam Altman is backtracking on that commitment and is determined to change the company from a non-profit, to a for-profit, claiming the company can’t succeed as a leader in AI if it remains a non-profit, despite OpenAI’s massive technological advances and success in fundraising over the years as a non-profit organization.
OpenAI’s non-profit status has provided the company with tax breaks and attracted some of the world's best engineers and researchers who believe in the company’s mission to build AI for the greater good.
Now this transition sets a dangerous precedent around the launching and governance of non-profit organizations. It also puts the future of this world-changing technology in the hands of a select few with unchecked power, prioritizing massive profits over the company’s mission.
More than ever, we need tech leaders to keep to their commitment to create safe technology that benefits everyone.
Tell the Attorneys General of California and Delaware, and the board of OpenAI:
Protect OpenAI's mission for public good. Block its transition to a for-profit company.
